Bonjour Indiana!

Posted by: Fortville Bastille Day Committee on: January 3, 2012

Save the date! Fortville Bastille Day will take place on Saturday, July 14th, 2012 from 5 to 11pm in Landmark Park, Fortville, Indiana.

Bring your favorite chair and blanket, and a picnic basket. Or come empty-handed and enjoy delicious food and treats from local chefs. And if you are getting too hot, cool off with a refreshing desserts. No, you won’t go hungry at Bastille Day…

We’ll make sure you feel right in France by playing a variety of French music, from Carla Bruni, Jacques Brel and Zazie to Edith Piaf and accordion music.

What’s in it for the little ones? After face painting, make sure to take them to the puppet show theatre that will feature a whimsical French-themed performance.

Especially don’t miss our special “Pétanque Championship”! Pétanque is a form of bocce balls where the goal is to throw balls as close as possible to a small ball called a cochonnet (literally “piglet”) or jack. The game is played by about 17 million people in France. Just come in and sign up on the sheets to participate in the championship. Anybody 5 and up can play!

At dusk we will have a beautiful candle-light lantern procession for the children. This is a French tradition for Bastille Day and it is both fun and gorgeous looking. Be sure to join us by 9:30pm!

Last, but not least, we will have a spectacular laser light show with a 30 foot screen made possible by our wonderful sponsors. The show will start at 10pm and will last about 20 minutes.

Entrance to Fortville Bastille Day is free and open to the public!

The Lantern Procession: A 130-Year-Old Bastille Day Tradition

Posted by: Fortville Bastille Day Committee on: February 1, 2012

Bastille Day was declared France’s National Day in 1880 and the tradition has always been for every township to organize a lantern parade the night prior to the fourteenth of July. Our Fortville Bastille Day will follow this 130-year-old custom in grand fashion…

Kids will learn how to make their own lanterns using empty plastic soda bottles (we are accepting donations of empty 1 or 2 litter bottles at 12 South Main – thank you!), colorful and fun tissue paper, picture hanging wire, tape and twigs. We’ll show them how to add a little bit of sand at the bottom, drop a tea light and light it: voilà! The result is a beautiful soft glow that makes for a serene yet joyful atmosphere at dusk. And for the collectors, we’ll also have authentic French lanterns for sale.

All lantern holders will be invited to gather next to the Landmark Park gazebo around 9:30p for the final procession. The parade will take participants throughout the park, strolling under the strings of lights hanging from tree to tree, accompanied by authentic French music, and will end at the entrance of the laser light area, where the show is to begin shortly after.

Don’t miss this stunning Bastille Day tradition!

Historical Actor Interpretation Coming To Fortville Bastille Day

Posted by: Fortville Bastille Day Committee on: January 20, 2012

I am happy to report that seasoned actor Collin Moore has agreed to provide three historical story-telling skits during the Fortville Bastille Day on July 14th. Moore, who has performed in multiple plays at Mud Creek Players and Civic Theater in Indianapolis and has won an impressive list of awards, is currently researching the events that led to the storming of the Bastille in Paris in the summer of 1789. He and Director Jay Ganz from the Children’s Museum are writing original scripts just for our Bastille Day celebration! Moore will provide historical interpretation from the point of view of three very different characters of the French Revolution: a peasant, a merchant, and an aristocrat.
Collin Moore

Collin is an incredible actor“, says Carol Ganz, a member of Mud Creek Players. He loves to write and perform original theatrical pieces.

Be sure to be in Fortville’s Landmark Park on July 14th from 5-11p and catch those three original skits that will provide a lively view of the events that led to the French Revolution!

Fortville Bastille Day To Bring the Magic Of A Laser Light Show

Posted by: Fortville Bastille Day Committee on: January 10, 2012

We all know that past 4th of July we feel a little “fireworked out”. But a laser light show? Now that is something different…

2010 Bastille Day Laser Show

We had our first laser show last year and it was a new experience for many visitors. Images are projected on a giant screen while music is playing. On top of that, laser light beams are shone high into the sky, onto the nearby trees and buildings and right above spectators’ heads. Kids love the high tech of laser shows, and older folks are amazed by the unique and beautiful look of laser technology.

Laser Image Productions is the company behind the show. They are headquartered in Greenfield, Indiana, and travel all over the United States to perform in front of both small and very large crowds. We are very grateful to see them stop and participate in our Fortville Bastille Day.

Laser light shows are an eco-friendly alternative to traditional fireworks. They are self-contained and require only power, water and setup space. They can go in all types of weather conditions and have no impact on the environment: they don’t leave residue and can’t cause fire. The show is produced using a 7-thousand-watt sound system, fog machines and intelligent lighting: full color Argon/Krypton white light lasers for the graphic images, and high power YAG laser beam projectors.

The family-friendly show will last approximately 25 minutes and include all types of music, French and American. Laser Light Shows are a great evening finale for any special event. People of all ages will gather on the grounds for the “coolest thing they have ever seen”.
